Spring Arbor Men’s Basketball cruises in season opener

SPRING ARBOR MI-- Spring Arbor University men’s basketball team opened the 2018-19 season with a 94-57 victory over East-West University on Tuesday night inside the McDonald Athletic Center.


The Cougars put five players in double figures, including a team-high 17 points from senior Tom Hamilton, on their way to the win. Sophomore transfer Nick Welch also made an immediate impact in his debut posting a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

 

Spring Arbor never trailed in the game after opening the night on a 13-3 run.


East-West kept the score close throughout much of the first half, and trimmed the deficit to five, 22-17, with a 6-0 run with 5:18 to play in the period. 

Paul Marandet halted the Phantoms’ momentum with four straight points. The Cougars would take a 35-23 lead into halftime.


SAU broke the game wide open in the second stanza, outscoring East-West 59-34 over the final 20 minutes. The Cougars shot 51 percent (18-for-35) from the field and went 18-for-21 from the free throw line in the second period.

Spring Arbor Men’s Soccer moves up to No. 20 in Top 25 Poll 


 

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – For the second straight week, the Spring Arbor University men’s soccer team climbed in the rankings. This week, the Cougars moved up one more spot to No. 20 in the NAIA Men’s Soccer Coaches’ Top 25 Poll, released by the national office Tuesday.


Head coach Nathan Miller’s squad earned two more wins last week to extend the winning streak to four in a row. The Cougars defeated Indiana Wesleyan University 3-2 behind a pair of goals from Roderic Green and shutout Mount Vernon Nazarene University 3-0.

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University women’s soccer team remains the unanimous choice as the top-ranked program in the nation, claiming all 18 first-place votes in the fifth regular season edition of the NAIA Women’s Soccer Coaches’ Top 25 Poll, released by the national office on Tuesday.


Spring Arbor remained unbeaten with two more wins last week. The Cougars opened Crossroads League play with a 2-0 shutout of then-No. 22 Taylor University, which jumped four spots to No. 18 in the new poll, and a 6-0 blanking of the University of Saint Francis.

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Spring Arbor University moved up one spot to No. 21 in the fifth regular season edition of the NAIA Men’s Soccer Coaches’ Top 25 Poll, the national office announced Tuesday.


Spring Arbor opened Crossroads League play last week with two road victories, defeating Taylor University 1-0 and the University of Saint Francis 3-1. Senior Morris Kamara provided three of SAU’s four goals, including both game-winners, on his way to earning the league’s Offensive Player of the Week award while junior Alex Sokalski was recognized as the Defensive Player of the Week.

Spring Arbor’s Balcer, Henderlong claim Crossroads League Women’s Soccer Player of the Week honors 


SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – A pair of Spring Arbor University women’s soccer athletes were recognized with conference honors. Bethany Balcer earned her second Crossroads League Offensive Player of the Week distinction this season and Malorie Henderlong received the first Crossroads League Defensive Player of the Week accolade of her career.

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Spring Arbor University junior defender Alex Sokalski was named the Crossroads League’s Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.


Sokalski anchored the defense for No. 22 Spring Arbor in a pair of road victories last week. The Cougars defeated Taylor University 1-0 in their fifth shutout of the season and came from behind to beat the University of Saint Francis 3-1.

Spring Arbor Baseball opens fall season with split versus Olivet

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University baseball team opened the fall portion of its 2018-19 season splitting two games against Olivet College on Saturday at Hank Burbridge Field. The Cougars fell 6-5 in game one before bouncing back with a 9-2 victory in game two.

Spring Arbor Volleyball stuns nationally ranked Saint Francis in five-set thriller

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – In front of a boisterous Cougar crowd, the Spring Arbor University volleyball team made a statement Friday night, knocking off No. 16 ranked University of Saint Francis in five sets inside the McDonald Athletic Complex.


Saint Francis entered the night as the Crossroads League leader and on a 15-match winning streak, but was dealt its first league loss of the season by the undaunted Cougars.


Spring Arbor’s victory was the first over a Top 25 opponent since the 2011 campaign when it defeated Madonna, who was also ranked No. 16 at the time.

Spring Arbor will look for its fourth straight win when it takes on Goshen College (7-12, 1-6 CL) in Goshen, Indiana on Saturday, Sept. 22. First serve is set for 3 p.m.

Spring Arbor Women’s Golf finishes Top 5 at Pure Michigan Invitational 

 

ADA, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University women’s golf team grabbed its second straight top-5 finish, placing fifth at the Pure Michigan Invitational held at Quail Ridge Golf Club on Wednesday.


The Cougars posted a 358 – a shot back of fourth place. The hosts, Grace College, took home first place with a winning score of 319.


Junior Madison Waldie led the way for SAU with her first top-10 finish of the year. Waldie shot an 84 to land in a tie for ninth place in a field of more than 60 golfers.

Spring Arbor will have a couple weeks off before returning to action at the Players Club Invitational, held at Players Club at Woodland Trails, in Yorktown, Indiana on Friday, Oct. 5 and Saturday, Oct. 6.

Spring Arbor Women’s Soccer remains atop NAIA Top 25 Poll

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University women’s soccer team continues its reign as the nation’s top team, coming in at No. 1 for the fifth consecutive NAIA Women’s Soccer Coaches’ Top 25 Poll.


Since battling then-No. 3 ranked Northwestern Ohio to a 1-1 draw, Spring Arbor has rattled off four consecutive wins, including a 2-0 shutout of No. 17 Embry-Riddle (AZ).


Senior Bethany Balcer has scored a team-high eight goals and handed out three assists. Kaley Buck ranks second on the team with four goals while Lexi Ponstein has tallied three. In addition to her two goals, Morgan Marshall has been credited with a team-leading six assists.


Goalkeeper Allison Keizer has allowed only one goal in six games played and boasts a 0.212 goals against average, which ranks third in the country.

Spring Arbor (6-0-1) begins Crossroads League play with a home match against No. 23 Taylor University (5-0-2) on Wednesday, Sept. 26 starting at 7 p.m.

Spring Arbor's Weidman, Kamara receive National Men's Soccer Player of the Week honors

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – One day after being named the Crossroads League Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week for their performances in the Cougars’ two wins last week, Spring Arbor University’s Morris Kamara (Grand Rapids, MI / Stevenson) and Zach Weidman (Spring Arbor, MI / Jackson Christian) were named the NAIA National Men’s Soccer Players of the Week. The announcement was made Tuesday afternoon by the national office.


Not only is this the first national honor for, both, Kamara and Weidman, but the duo also become the first players in recorded program history to receive the recognition.


Kamara poured in four goals last week in Spring Arbor’s wins over No. 12 Cardinal Stritch University and Lawrence Tech, which was just outside the top-25 rankings at No. 26. The senior forward had one goal against Cardinal Stritch before tallying three against LTU for his second hat trick of the season.


On the season, Kamara has tallied a team-high eight goals, which also ranks first in the conference.

Weidman set a new career-high with 11 saves in the Cougars' 2-1 upset win over the 12th ranked Wolves and added three more in a shutout win over the Blue Devils, who are receiving votes in the top-25 poll.


Weidman boasts a 4-0-0 record between the pipes this season and has allowed just one goal in 306 minutes of action while making 18 saves.


Spring Arbor (6-2-0) concludes the non-conference portion of its schedule with a match at Madonna University (4-2-0) on Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 4 p.m.

Spring Arbor Men’s Soccer vaults into Top 25

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Coming off two big wins last week, the Spring Arbor University men’s soccer team moved into the NAIA Men’s Soccer Coaches’ Top 25 Poll for the first time this season at No. 21.


Spring Arbor defeated No. 12 Cardinal Stritch University and Lawrence Tech, who was receiving votes, to push its winning streak to four. Cole Russell delivered the game-winner in the upset win over the Wolves while Morris Kamara led the way against the Blue Devils with his second hat trick of the season.


Kamara, who was recently named the NAIA National Offensive Player of the Week, currently leads the Crossroads League with eight goals scored. Janum Sailor ranks second on the team with three while Russell and Mario Colella have tallied two apiece.


Goalkeeper Zach Weidman, the reigning NAIA National Defensive Player of the Week, is 4-0 between the pipes and has allowed just one goal in 306 minutes of action while making 18 saves.


Spring Arbor (6-2-0) concludes the non-conference portion of its schedule with a match at Madonna University (4-2-0) on Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 4 p.m.

SPRING ARBOR VOLLEYBALL GETS FIVE-SET ROAD WIN AT MVNU


MOUNT VERNON, Ohio – The Spring Arbor University volleyball team kicked off the weekend with a hard-fought, five-set victory over Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Friday night.


The Cougars battled back after dropping the first set to claim their 11th win of the season and move to 11-5 overall and 2-4 in the Crossroads League.

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University volleyball team opened up the new McDonald Athletic Center with a Crossroads League match against Bethel College on Wednesday night. The Cougars raced out to a 1-0 set lead behind a boisterous crowd, but the Pilots battled back to take the next three sets to halt SAU’s four-match winning streak.

Spring Arbor’s Sydney Ritz wins Crossroads League Volleyball Attacker of the Week

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Spring Arbor University's Sydney Ritz (Wayland, MI / Wayland Union) took home co-MVP honors from the Siena Heights University Invitational to win Crossroads League Volleyball Attacker of the Week. 


Ritz helped lead the Cougars to a 4-1 week, including a perfect 4-0 mark at the SHU Invitational. She posted 49 kills during the tournament, averaging 3.5 kills per set, while hitting at a .484 clip.

Spring Arbor Women’s Soccer remains No. 1 in Top 25 Poll

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University women’s soccer team checked in at the top of the first regular season edition of the NAIA Women’s Soccer Coaches’ Top 25 Poll, released by the national office Tuesday.


Spring Arbor earned its third straight No. 1 ranking, grabbing 14 of 17 first place votes after beginning the campaign with a 2-0-1 record. Head coach Jason Crist and the Cougars posted back-to-back blowout wins over Trinity International University and Point Park University before drawing with then-No. 3 ranked University of Northwestern Ohio.


In three matches, SAU has scored 12 goals, which ranks first in the Crossroads League. Senior Bethany Balcer leads the way with five tallies while freshman Lexi Ponstein has three and Kaley Buck and Morgan Marshall have two apiece.


Spring Arbor returns to action at Concordia University (1-0-1) in Ann Arbor on Saturday, Sept. 8 starting at 5 p.m.

Spring Arbor's Bethany Balcer named CL Player of the Week

 

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Spring Arbor University senior Bethany Balcer has been named the Crossroads League Offensive Player of the Week for women’s soccer, the league announced Monday.


Balcer piled up five goals and two assists in a pair of wins for the No. 1 ranked Cougars. The senior midfielder tallied two goals in the team’s season-opening victory against Trinity International University. The second marker of the match was her 100thh career goal, becoming the first player in program history to reach the milestone. Four days later, Balcer followed it up with a three goal, two assist performance in a 7-1 rout of Point Park University.

Spring Arbor Volleyball sweeps final day of Early Bird Challenge

Spring Arbor Men’s Soccer receiving votes in NAIA Top 25 Preseason Poll

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University men’s soccer team will begin the 2018 season receiving votes in the NAIA Men’s Soccer Coaches’ Preseason Top 25 Poll, the national office announced Tuesday.

The Cougars had their winningest season in recent memory last year, posting 16 victories on their way to claiming their first-ever Crossroads League regular season championship. SAU boasted the league’s top scoring team with a program-record 58 goals while also ranking among the best defensively allowing 1.14 goals per game with nine shutouts.

Head coach Nathan Miller returns 19 players from last year’s roster, including the NAIA All-America Honorable Mention and Crossroads League Player of the Year Morris Kamara as well as the league’s Defensive Player of the Year Alex Sokalski.

Spring Arbor opens the season at home against Rochester College on Saturday, Aug. 18 with kick off set for 7 p.m.
