Cardinals ranked 10th in first NCAA Division II Football Regional Rankings

 The first installment of the NCAA Division II Football Regional Rankings have been released and the SVSU Football team is listed at No. 10 in the opening Super Region Three rankings. 


The top seven programs in the region at the end of the regular season will qualify for the NCAA Division II Football Playoffs with the No. 1 seed will receiving a first-round bye. Super Region Three consists of schools from the GLIAC, the Great American Conference (GAC), the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) and the Mid America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA).


The Cardinals, who are 6-2 overall and 3-2 in GLIAC play, host No. 9 nationally-ranked Grand Valley State Saturday (Oct. 27) in the annual Battle of the Valleys game and home finale for the Cardinals at Wickes Stadium. The Lakers appear at No. 3 in the initial Super Region Three rankings.


Saturday's Battle of the Valleys game will be kickoff at 1:00 p.m. and be streamed live on ESPN3. You can purchase tickets in advance at www.svsucardinals.com/tickets.

Football falls to No. 2 Ferris State, 28-14

UNIVERSITY CENTER -- The Cardinal football team hosted the No. 2 team in the country in the Ferris State Bulldogs on Saturday (Oct. 20) afternoon at Wickes Memorial Stadium. Despite a solid first half and halftime lead, the Bulldogs came back in the second half and pulled away for a 28-14 victory.


The win moves Ferris State to 8-0 overall and 6-0 in the GLIAC while the Cardinals drop to 6-2 and 3-2 in league action.


A lightning delay began the action, striking just three minutes before kickoff and forcing the start time back to 1:50 p.m.


The Bulldogs got on the board first, striking for a 62-yard touchdown pass to take a 7-0 lead with just under two minutes off the game clock. 


SVSU responded quickly, using a Nate McCrary 1-yard touchdown run that was set up by a long 76-yard pass play from Ryan Conklin to Michael King. A Connor Luksic PAT knotted the score at 7-7.


The Cardinals claimed a 14-7 lead with 5:23 showing on the clock on another McCrary 1-yard score. That touchdown was set up by another long pass play, this time from Conklin to Chad Gailliard for 34 yards that got the ball on the one.

Cardinals claim homecoming victory over Northern Michigan, 30-10

UNIVERSITY CENTER -- The Cardinal Football team posted a 30-10 Homecoming victory over the Northern Michigan University Wildcats at Wickes Stadium on Saturday (Oct. 13) afternoon. 


SVSU improves to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the GLIAC while the Wildcats fall to 1-6 and 0-5 in league play.


The first score of the contest came when Ryan Conklin found Chad Gailliard up the left sideline behind the defense for a 78-yard touchdown to make the count 7-0. 


That same duo would strike again shortly after when the offense got the ball back on a Michael Alexander interception on NMU's second play on the ensuing drive. On the eighth play of the next drive for SVSU, Conklin found Gailliard from 19 yards out, pushing the SVSU lead to 14-0 after a Connor Luksic PAT. 


Another Cardinal drive resulted in points with 11:41 showing on the clock in the second quarter, with Luksic drilling a 20-yard field goal attempt to cap-off a 10-play drive and make the lead 17-0.

SVSU Cardinals drop 21-17 contest at Ashland

ASHLAND, Ohio -- The Cardinal football team hit the road for the second straight week on Saturday (Oct. 6) night, traveling to face Ashland University in a GLIAC contest. In a back-and-forth matchup where SVSU held a slim fourth quarter lead, the home team came back and eventually claimed a victory by a 21-17 count. 


The loss is the first of the season for Saginaw Valley, as the Cards drop to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in league play. The Eagles improve to 3-3 overall with a 3-1 mark in the GLIAC.


Saginaw Valley got on the board first with 7:19 showing in the opening quarter, taking the first drive 15 plays and 68 yards for a 7-0 lead. That score was compliments of a 2-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Conklin to Chad Gailliard


The Eagles responded with two touchdowns to take a 14-7 lead, with the first coming as time expired in the first quarter and the second with 9:21 showing on the clock in the second.


The Cards would score once more before the half, using another long drive in 18 plays and 75 yards resulting in a 25-yard Connor Luksic field goal to trim the deficit to 14-10.

SVSU's Womens Volleyball Dominates Grand Valley, 3-0 


UNIVERSITY CENTER — The Cardinal Volleyball team hosted the Grand Valley State Lakers in an exciting match in Hamilton Gymnasium. Out of the gate, SVSU took set one quickly and went on to take the match 3-0, leading the Lakers to their sixth GLIAC loss of the season. SVSU heads to a 13-6 overall record, 7-3 in conference play.

Men's Soccer remains in first place after 2-0 shutout of Davenport 

 

UNIVERSITY CENTER -- The Cardinal Men's Soccer team remained atop the GLIAC standings after posting its second straight victory and second of the week, defeating the Davenport University Panthers by a 2-0 count on Friday (Oct. 5) afternoon at Braddock Field.

Saginaw Valley runs its current unbeaten streak to six matches and improves its overall record to 7-1-3 and 5-1-1 in league play. Davenport falls to 3-8-1 overall and 2-5-0 in the GLIAC.

Cardinal's Defense Comes Up Strong Against Mich. Tech. 10 - 0

HOUGHTON -- The Cardinal Football team made the trek north to face Michigan Tech on Saturday (Sep. 29) afternoon in league action and came away with a hard-fought 10-0 victory over the Huskies at Sherman Field. 


The shutout is the first of the season and it moves the Cardinals to 5-0 for the first time since the 2003 season, which was the undefeated and GLIACChampionship team. 


After an opening quarter that had three turnovers overall, SVSU got on the board first in the second quarter when Connor Luksic gave the visitors a 3-0 edge with a 25-yard field goal as 11:44 was left in the quarter. 


Luksic had another chance to put some points on the board, but his 34-yard attempt missed wide right with seven seconds left on the clock, sending the game to the halftime break with Saginaw Valley in the lead, 3-0. 


SVSU had 148 yards of total offense in the opening 30 minutes while the Huskies posted 128 yards. Michael Alexander led all defenders with eight first half tackles in the defensively-dominated contest.

David Still Named GLIAC Special Teams Player of the Week.


 

GLIAC -- Saginaw Valley State University junior defensive end David Still has been named the GLIAC Special Teams Player of the Week after leading the Cardinals to a 35-29 overtime victory at home over Wayne State.


Still had a big game in leading the Cardinals to a 35-29 comeback overtime victory at home over Wayne State. Still had seven tackles, including a half sack and two TFL in the contest. His biggest impact came with three seconds left and in overtime, where he blocked consecutive field goal attempts to nix the game-winning field goal attempt in regulation and on the WSU's first overtime possession.


SVSU is 4-0 for the first time since the 2005 season and travels to play at Michigan Tech this upcoming Saturday. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. at Tech's Sherman Field. The Cardinals are currently listed in the receiving votes section of the AFCA Division II Top 25 rankings.

SVSU Remains Undefeated with GLIAC Overtime Win Versus Wayne State, 35-29

 

UNIVERSITY CENTER -- The Saginaw Valley State University football team came through late in the game on Saturday afternoon for the second weekend in a row, scoring 15 fourth quarter points and six OT, to claim a 35-29 comeback victory over Wayne State University at Wickes Stadium.


SVSU found itself in a hard place after a late fourth quarter fumble, but two blocked kicks and a pass completed to Chad Gailliard, earned the Cardinals the victory to remain undefeated and head to a 1-0 record in conference play. 


After a tough start to the game saw Saginaw Valley down 7-0 at the 4:17 mark of the first quarter, the home team knotted the contest 7-7 on a 4-yard touchdown run by Nate McCrary with :07 seconds remaining on the clock. That score would end up carrying over for the Cardinals into the halftime break as well.

The Cardinals will head up north to take on the Michigan Tech Huskies Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. The Huskies are coming off a road game against #5 Grand Valley State Saturday night. The next home game for the SVSU football team will be homecoming against Northern Michigan on Oct. 13th. 


SVSU Football claims 21-20 comeback victory over Truman State

UNIVERSITY CENTER -- The Saginaw Valley State University football team came through late in the game on Saturday afternoon, scoring 14 fourth quarter points to claim a 21-20 comeback victory over Truman State University at Wickes Stadium.


SVSU found itself trailing after three straight second half scores from the Bulldogs but came through in the clutch, converting on six fourth down conversions in the final two drives to pull out the win. 


After a slow start to the game saw the Cards down 3-0 at the 2:24 marker of the first quarter, the home team grabbed a 7-3 lead on a 5-yard touchdown run by Ryan Conklin with 12:33 showing on the clock in the second quarter. That score carried over into the halftime break as well.

SVSU appoints John Decker as Director of Athletics

UNIVERSITY CENTER -- Saginaw Valley State University has appointed John Decker to serve as director of Athletics in a permanent capacity. Decker had been serving as the interim director since January when Mike Watson retired.


"I appreciate John's willingness to accept the challenge of leading our athletic department," said Donald Bachand, SVSU president. "His career has been outside of intercollegiate athletics, and over the past several months while he has been serving in an interim capacity, I have found value in the fresh perspective he has brought to the job, and the opportunities for growth he has identified."


"As a former student-athlete himself, John is passionate about providing our student-athletes with the best possible experience both educationally and competitively, and I know that will be his top priority every day."


Decker joined SVSU in 2014 as associate vice president and general counsel. Prior to that, he worked for 34 years for the Saginaw-based law firm Braun Kendrick, including 12 years as managing partner.


"I am excited for this opportunity to lead the SVSU Cardinal athletics program," Decker said. "We have a rich athletic tradition, combined with a good balance of academic performance, which is what the NCAA Division II athletic experience should be."


A Saginaw native, Decker played college football at the University of Nebraska, where he completed a bachelor's degree. He earned a law degree at Duke University.


Decker will hold an appointment as associate vice president for legal affairs at SVSU, though his primary responsibilities will lie in Athletics. His wife Sally is a professor of nursing at SVSU; they have two adult children.         

Dustin Pumford Named GLIAC Men's Golfer of the Week

GLIAC -- Saginaw Valley State University senior Men's Golf student-athlete has been named the GLIAC Men's Golfer of the Week after his solid play this past weekend at the 2018 Northern Michigan University Match Play Invitational.


Pumford started the 2018-19 campaign off solid, posting a perfect 6-0 record over the weekend to claim the individual title at the Northern Michigan University Match Play Invitational. Pumford led the Cardinals to a third place overall finish in the event, which was played at Marquette Golf Club's Greywalls Course. 


The Cardinals are back in action this weekend, traveling to play at the Ferris State University Invitational Saturday and Sunday. That will take place at the Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Michigan.

Omar Sinclair Named GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week

September 11, 2018

 

GLIAC — Saginaw Valley State University senior defender Omar Sinclair has been selected as the GLIACDefensive Player of the Week after leading the Cardinals to a pair of shutouts this past weekend in regional action. 


Sinclair was stellar on the back line in a pair of matches this past weekend for the Cardinals. Sinclair led a defense that allowed zero goals and upped its shutout tally on the season to three. SVSU allowed only a pair of shots on goal for the weekend and has only allowed four this season in as many contests.


The Cardinals remain home at Braddock Field on Friday (Sep. 14), hosting Parkside in a 2:30 p.m. matchup. The men follow the women's match earlier at noon, with the Lady Cardinals facing Ferris State University. Full details will be available at www.svsucardinals.com.

Goforth Earns GLIAC Runner of the Week Accolades

September 10, 2018


GLIAC Saginaw Valley State senior Tom Goforth claimed the individual title at the 2018 Calvin Knight Invitational, crossing the line in a final time of 24:52.4 in the 8K race. 


Goforth, the 2016 all-american for Saginaw Valley, was just two seconds off his personal best time for an 8K cross country race and led the team to a second place finish in the event.

Cards Move to 2-0 After 41-10 Victory Over Walsh

September 8, 2018


NORTH CANTON, Ohio -- The Saginaw Valley Football team moved to 2-0 on the season after traveling to play Walsh University, defeating the Cavaliers 41-10 on Saturday (Sep. 8) at the Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium. 


The Cardinals had a balanced scoring attack throughout and held Walsh to only 174 yards of total offense in claiming the 31-point victory. 


SV got out to a quick 14-0 lead, scoring on the opening drive after Jermaih Johnson scampered in from 11 yards out and Nate McCrary scored from three yards out off a forced fumble on the ensuing kickoff. That fumble was forced by Josh Schelke and scooped-up by Dominick Fiscelli. Both PAT attempts were good from Connor Luksic, who was perfect (5-5) on his point after tries once again. Luksic capped the scoring for the first quarter with a 40-yard field goal, making the score 17-0 after 15 minutes of action.

Ryan Conklin Named GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week

GLIAC -- Saginaw Valley State University junior quarterback Ryan Conklin has been named the GLIACOffensive Player of the Week following his standout performance in the Cardinals' season-opening 45-7 victory over Alderson Broaddus at Wickes Stadium.  


 

Saginaw Valley junior quarterback Ryan Conklin led the Cardinals to a season-opening victory at home over Alderson Broaddus, 45-7. Conklin connected on 25-of-34 passes (73.5%) for 303 yards, a career-high four touchdowns and no interceptions. He hit a total of nine different receivers while the Cardinals racked-up 550 yards of total offense.

Amanda Minissale Named GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week.


GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its weekly awards after the first weekend of competition to begin the 2018 women's soccer season. 


Saginaw Valley senior defender Amanda Minissale helped lead the Cardinals to a 2-0 road record over the weekend with wins over regional foes Ohio Dominican and Alderson Broaddus. She helped keep a clean sheet for the Cards in the 8-0 over ABU, also contributing a goal and assist in the victory.

Joe Wright Named GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week 


GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its weekly awards following the first week of the 2018 men's soccer season.


  Saginaw Valley freshman midfielder Joe Wright played a huge part defensively in leading the Cardinals to a 1-0-1 record over the weekend in regional action. The Cardinals played to a 0-0 double overtime draw against the No. 1 team in the country, Charleston, before pulling out a 2-1 win over Alderson Broaddus.

Cardinals Win Big in Home Opener Over Alderson Broaddus, 45-7

UNIVERSITY CENTER -- The SVSU Football team opened its season at Wickes Stadium for the first time since the 2014 season. The Cardinals came to play in Thursday night's opener, racking-up 550 yards of offense while holding Alderson Broaddus to just 153 in securing a 45-7 win over the Battlers. 


Saginaw Valley took a 7-0 lead at the 9:50 mark of the opening quarter on a five yard run from Nate McCrary. That was answered by the Battlers' only score of the game, a long 50 yard pass connection to knot the score at 7-7.

 

The Cards got a pair of 10 yard touchdown pass hook-ups from Ryan Conklin to Chad Gailliard in the second quarter, with one coming after a forced fumble by David Still and recovery by Patrik Moriarty. That gave the home squad a 21-7 edge heading into the half.


McCrary got into the action once again in the third quarter, taking a swing pass 10 yards to the endzone to push the lead to 28-7 with 12:11 showing on the clock. Michael King would be the next recipient of a Conklin scoring pass, pulling in a six yard over the shoulder pass in the corner of the endzone to make it 35-7 in SV's favor.

2018 Axe Bowl to be Streamed Nationally on ESPN3

INDIANAPOLIS --  Division II announced today 19 regular-season football games that will be showcased on ESPN3 or NCAA social media as part of a new media agreement intended to promote the division on several platforms throughout the academic year. 


The 2018 Axe Bowl, featuring rivals Saginaw Valley State University and Northwood University, will be featured nationally. The announcement was made today (Aug. 23) as part of the NCAA Division II Showcase Series of football games.

New Baseball Coach Named

August 15, 2018

 

UNIVERSITY CENTER -- Saginaw Valley State University Director of Athletics John Decker has announced Steve Jaksa as the Cardinals' Head Baseball Coach today. Jaksa becomes the fifth head coach in the history of the program.  

Jaksa served as head coach at Central Michigan University for 16 seasons and ranks second on CMU's all-time coaching wins list with an overall record of 507-421-2. He led Central Michigan to three Mid-American Conference championships and six MAC West Division titles while compiling a 257-157 record in conference action.
